Weekly Digest: October 14, 2016

Howzit (basically “what’s up” in South Africa – where I’m in route to right now)! Here is your weekly dose of my best tips for how to travel the world while you grow your career and make a difference.

Travel the world

Finding the right gifts for travelers in your life can be challenging. Vagabonds tend to be a minimalist bunch that prefer to spend their money on flights and good food – not stuff. However, some things are necessary and here are 17 of the best travel gifts for you to give to your travel-obsessed friend, partner, or family member (or of course, yourself).

Grow your career

Conduct routine audits of your daily tasks and pick items to outsource. It could be whatever is time consuming, inconsistent with your unique strengths, or things you simply do not enjoy doing. Do not think you need a big budget to do this either. I have actively hired on Upwork for a long time. You can find thousands of freelancers from all over the world who specialize in niche tasks, allowing you to find someone who can do nearly any task much better, faster, and cheaper than you can imagine. Even if it comes out of your pocket, it is worth the cost to have more productivity, happiness, and time.

Make a difference

Our economy (and society) is based on maximizing individual gain. While it seem counterintuitive, it is far more productive and enjoyable to make sure everyone else get 51% (or more) of the value from every interaction or business dealing with you. This creates a spirit of giving, a desire for reciprocation instead of concession, and helps build relationships for the long-term. That should be worth far more to you and the world than a few extra bucks today. Look for ways to help others during negotiations, but also do it with the small things – such as, fighting to pick up the bill and leaving a bigger tip. It is a much better life and makes the world just a little bit better.

Fun updates:

  • Most popular post on Instagram  –  I trekked in the cold, wind, and rain to find this abandoned plane wreckage on Solheimasandur’s black sand beach. The trek was worth it as I had this beach and plane all to myself!
  • Featured article  –  Skift recently published a manifesto on the need for the travel industry to rethink what it means to the world. It is worth a read: The Geopolitics of Travel
  • Quote of the week  –  “Seek adventure. Choose love. Serve others. Make something awesome. Live a good story. Do it your way.” – me 🙂

Thanks for your attention and have an awesome weekend!
