goKonrad’s Ubud travel blog (Bali, Indonesia)
Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali. It is a laid back, spiritual, and artistic city that inspires travelers to stick around for a while. Nearly every corner offers organic food and fresh juice, high quality and cheap Balinese massages, and yoga classes with a lush nature backdrop. Ubud has remained laid back, cheap, and with relatively minimal commercialization despite becoming a major tourist stop for backpackers, honeymooners, and travelers going through their own version of Eat Pray Love.
Here are a few of my favorite things to do in Ubud, Bali that you should make sure to see and do on your trip:
- The Yoga Barn: Yoga is one of the most popular activities in Bali and The Yoga Barn is the local favorite. It’s a large and scenic yoga studio, built into the forest, that offers a large number of classes and workshops throughout the day.
- Monkey Forest: This forest is filled with two things, temples and monkeys. Originally built as an ancient place of worship, the monkeys made it their home. You will see thousands of monkeys playing and hanging out. Be careful and hold on to your belongings, some of the monkeys are fun and playful, while others are aggressive kleptomaniacs.
- Tegallalang Rice Terraces: A short drive outside of the city and you will find beautiful rice paddies with their centuries-old irrigation systems. I rented a motorbike for the day and it was an easy drive out to there.
- Balinese Massage: Balinese style is a full-body, deep-tissue, holistic massage that uses a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure, reflexology, and aromatherapy. Massage businesses are everywhere in Ubud and are extremely cheap. I had a 90-minute, 4 hands massage (2 people) during a rain storm and was pretty sure I was in heaven.
- Saraswati Temple: Ubud is full of Hindu temples and one of the most impressive is the Saraswati Temple, which was built in honor of the Hindu goddess of learning, literature and art.
- Agung Rai Museum of Art: This museum has a large collection of local art.
- Campuhan Ridge Walk: This is an easy and free nature hike that offers beautiful views.
- Elephant Cave: This historical archeological site, actually named, Goa Gajah, was built as a spiritual place for meditation in the 11th
- Riverside Cafe: Located at the Four Seasons, this outdoor restauraunt gives you serene views alongside the Ayung River.
- Sari Organik: This is one of the best restaurants that allows you to dine while overlooking a paddy field. It’s a beautiful setting with delicious food.
- Tegenungan Waterfall: Surrounded by a lush, green landscape, this is a beautiful waterfall that people often cliff jump off of
- Seniman Coffee Studio: Taste the city’s best local brew and watch the roasting process.
