Weekly Digest: November 25, 2016
Fellow Americans, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Everyone else, I hope you had the best Thursday ever. Here is your weekly dose of my best tips for how to travel the world while you grow your career and make a difference.
Travel the world
When traveling, find the best local bookstore in town. It is fascinating to check out what the main local issues are, what topics the well-read locals are prioritizing, and which English books are currently being translated and distributed around the world. Additionally, you will likely find the best books about the destination you are visiting that you will unlikely discover elsewhere. Some of my best travel insights have come from books I have found this way. I recently picked up Understanding Cairo: The Logic of a City Out of Control in Cairo and Africa: Altered States, Ordinary Miracles in Namibia. Both books have greatly enhanced my experience and perspectives.
Grow your career
I loved Gary Vaynerchuk’s recent Call Out Tuesday rant. If you go to work on Monday and hate your day, but don’t know what to do or how to change, then simply start by breaking your pattern. Call off work on Tuesday and prioritize action. You don’t have to figure it all out, just do something different. My suggestion would be to take a day trip and explore somewhere new, book an international trip to somewhere outside your comfort zone, or give yourself a 24 hour limit to launch the bare minimum first version of that project you keep thinking about.
Make a difference
As opposed to giving into the compulsory consumption mania of Black Friday, take a moment to watch Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things (here is their book as well: Minimalism). This documentary will inspire you to choose meaning over stuff, purpose over expectation, and intention over compulsion. Here’s a good snippet about Minimalism from the authors: “Minimalists don’t focus on having less, less, less; rather, we focus on making room for more: more time, more passion, more experiences, more growth, more contribution, more contentment. More freedom. Clearing the clutter from life’s path helps us make that room.” This holiday season, let the shopping madness be a constant reminder to love people more and love stuff less.
